Kenai and Kasilof River
Gene Meyer, of Moose River Adventures
Invites you to fish the Kenai and Kasilof
Rivers on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska.
The Kenai River is home to the worlds
largest King Salmon, where every year 60,
70, and 80 plus pound King Salmon are
caught. The Kenai River, and Kasilof
River also boasts plentiful runs of Sockeye
Salmon, commonly called Reds, that is
pound for pound the hardest fighting, best
eating Salmon in Alaska. August brings
large numbers of Silver Salmon, Coho’s,
and on even years Pink Salmon, Humpies,
for non-stop fishing action. From mid-June
to the end of October, fly fish for trophy
Rainbow Trout that every year exceeds 15lbs.
So, come join us at Moose River Adventures
for an exciting fishing trip, where every day
you have the chance to catch that “fish of a
lifetime”
Kenai River King Salmon
The season begins in mid-May with the first of the two runs of King Salmon. Also called Chinook Salmon, the early run has about 16,000 fish, that run till late June. The average fish is 35lbs, but they can exceed 70lbs. The world record King Salmon is 97lbs 4oz and was caught at this time. There is far less fishing pressure during the early run, even though there are less fish in the river during the early run the catch rate is higher.
The late run of Kings starts the first week of July and lasts to the close of season on the July 31st. These are the “big boys” that the Kenai River is famous for, averaging 35 to 40 lbs with several each year running 60 to 80lbs. We fish them in the lower river as they come in on the tides, fresh from the ocean and full of fight. Imagine the adrenalin rush from fighting a 40 plus pound King Salmon for 20 minutes or more. With about 41,000 Kings entering the river in one month, mostly during the last two weeks, these dates fill up fast so book early.
Kenai River Sockeye Salmon
Also beginning in late May is the early run of Sockeye Salmon, commonly called Red Salmon. These early run Reds congregate at the mouth of the Russian River where it joins the Kenai River, just south of Coopers Landing. The early run Red salmon, which average about 6 lbs, are caught from the banks of the rivers, and pound for pound, are the hardest fighting, best eating, Salmon anywhere. The Russian river is only a 40 minute drive north of Soldotna, and I recommend that you spend at least one day of your Alaskan trip in pursuit of these delicious fish.
The late run Sockeye Salmon appear in the main Kenai River in mid-July through August. These fish are larger than the early run Reds, about 10 lbs, but 12 to 14 pounders are not uncommon. When the Reds are in, its some of the wildest action you have ever experienced, and we have all the gear needed to fill the coolers.
Kenai River Silver Salmon
August means Coho’s or Silver Salmon, throughout the entire river. The crowds are gone, the weather is cool, but the fishing is hot. Last year the Silver Salmon averaged 12 lbs with an occasional 18 pounder boated. The most fished for Salmon in Alaska, they are acrobatic fighters and excellent table fare. This year the limit goes from two fish in August to three fish from September 1st to November 30th.
August, on even years, also brings huge runs of Pink Salmon, or Humpies. These Salmon are not as good eating as the Kings, Reds, or Silvers, but are easy to catch and provide non-stop action for the whole family.
Kenai River Rainbow Trout
From June 15th to late October, the Rainbow Trout fishing in the Kenai River is unmatched for the size and numbers of trophy fish. Hooking a 10 lb plus Rainbow Trout on a fly rod, from the shore or drift boat, is a trout fishing dream come true. Add to that the breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife, and you have a Kenai River fishing experience you will not soon forget. |
